Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Burrowmoor Primary Academy, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including Nursery and Reception, provides a welcoming and nurturing start to school. We create an environment where children feel safe, valued and confident, supporting them to develop a love of learning from the very beginning.

Our approach is child centred. We recognise that every child comes to us with different experiences and starting points, and we work carefully to meet their individual needs. By building on what children already know and can do, we help them make strong progress at their own pace.

Our EYFS Approach

Our EYFS provision follows the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Within this, we plan a flexible and responsive curriculum that reflects children’s interests, supports their next steps and meets statutory requirements.

Learning is organised around:

• Prime Areas: Communication and Language, Physical Development, and Personal, Social and Emotional Development
• Specific Areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design

These areas work together to support children’s development and prepare them for future learning.

A Curriculum That Builds Strong Foundations

Our EYFS curriculum is designed to:

• Encourage curiosity, independence and creativity
• Develop strong communication, language and early literacy skills
• Support early mathematical understanding
• Promote confidence, self‑regulation and positive learning behaviours

High-quality adult interactions, inclusive provision and purposeful play help children develop the skills and confidence needed for Key Stage 1.

Play-Based Learning and Assessment

Play is at the heart of learning in EYFS. Through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated experiences, children are supported to explore, investigate and develop their understanding of the world. Practitioners observe children closely and use ongoing assessment to plan appropriate support and challenge.

We place a strong emphasis on communication and language, vocabulary development and early reading as key foundations for learning.

Preparing for the Next Stage

Our EYFS team works closely with Key Stage 1 staff to ensure a smooth transition into Year 1. By the end of Reception, children are confident, independent and well-prepared for the next stage of their learning.
