Autumn 2 2022
During the second part of autumn term, Year Five are continuing to read the story, Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief based on their Ancient Greece topic. We will be writing a non-chronological report about a mythical creature and a diary entry as one of the characters from the story. In Guided Reading, we will be using two interesting books: Hidden Figures and The Girl of Ink and Stars to their comprehension skills. In Maths, we are learning the formal written methods for long multiplication and division. Following this, we will move on to learning about fractions.
In Science, we are learning all about the Earth, moon and the sun answering the question: What is the solar system? In history, we will be continuing to look at the Ancient Greece and we will be investigating what impact the people of Ancient Greece had on the world. In art, we will be creating our own Greek vases and will be investigating the style of vases the Ancient Greeks made and what they tell us about life in Ancient Greece. Finally, in computing we are exploring using videos and will be creating one of our own. P.E. is still on Wednesday afternoons and swimming is on a Friday.
Autumn 1 2022
During this part of the Autumn term, Year 5 are being inspired by the story Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief and will be writing a Greek Myth. In Guided Reading, we will be using the fantastic story of ‘The Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’ to develop understanding of what questions are asking in order to improve their comprehension skills.
In Maths, we are currently looking at using the written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and using these to problem solve. We will also be developing our recall of times tables and developing knowledge linked with multiplication facts.
In Science, we are investigating forces and answering the question ‘What would happen without gravity?‘ The focus in History will be the Ancient Greeks and we will be investigating what impact the Ancient Greeks had on the world? Design Technology is linked directly to this topic and we will be designing and making our own Greek style sandals.
Finally, in Computing we are discovering how computer systems work and how we can use the internet safely to share information. P.E. is on Wednesday afternoons and swimming is on a Friday.
Summer 1 2022
During this half term, Year 5 will be writing an interview with Brian Selznick in a magazine article, reviewing the film ‘Hugo’ based on the book ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’ and writing a balanced argument about which place they would prefer to live (linked to Geography). In Teaching Reading, we will be using the fantastic fiction book, ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ to develop comprehension skills. In Maths, we are currently looking at the links between fractions, decimals and percentages. In Science, we are continuing to investigate the human life cycle and the gestation periods of different mammals, and then we will investigate different materials to answer, ‘Can we manipulate and change materials?
In Geography, we are looking at the following question: ‘Where would you rather live?’ To answer this, we will be comparing three different capital cities: London, Paris and Washington. Finally, in Computing we are developing our coding skills using Scratch to create different games. In P.E on Thursdays, we are developing a dance related to football and on Tuesdays, we are practising our Athletic skills.
Spring 2 2022 Update
During this half term, Year 5 will be writing their very own Greek myths and a descriptive poem about one of the Greek gods or goddesses. We will also be using the fantastic fiction book: ‘Who Let the Gods Out?‘ to develop their understanding of what questions are asking in order to improve their comprehension skills.
In Maths, we are currently developing our knowledge around fractions, adding and subtracting them and investigating decimals and percentages and how they relate to fractions. In Science, we are continuing to investigate whether or not all plants and animals reproduce in the same way, delving into the world of different animal’s life cycles and comparing their similarities and differences. This will lead us to the next Science theme – ‘should we live forever?’ where we will investigate the human life cycle and the changes we go through as we develop and grow.
In History, we are looking at what the Greeks did for us, which links to computing where we are developing our skills using PowerPoint by creating a presentation about the Greek gods. In P.E. on Thursdays we are creating a dance related to space. Tuesday P.E. sessions will be looking at developing skills in order to play rounders.
