Learning My Timestables
Learning your times tables is important for several reasons — they’re one of the building blocks of math. Here’s why:
-

Speed and Confidence:
Knowing your times tables helps you answer multiplication and division questions quickly, without having to stop and work them out every time. This makes you more confident in math. -

Foundation for Harder Math:
Many topics — like fractions, division, algebra, area, and percentages — rely on multiplication. If you know your times tables well, these topics become much easier to understand. -

Problem Solving:
When you don’t have to think about basic facts, your brain can focus on understanding and solving bigger problems. -

Everyday Life Skills:
You use multiplication all the time in real life — when shopping, cooking, measuring, or managing money. Knowing your times tables helps you make quick and accurate calculations. -

Mental Math and Memory:
Memorizing your times tables strengthens your memory and helps you get better at doing math in your head.
At Burrowmoor we aim to make learning your timetables FUN and Exciting. For this to work we ask our parents to support us at home and we also spend time in school learning them. Below are some ways that we use which can also be used at home to help us become more confident Mathmaticians.

In Year 4 our children take part in the National Testing - The Multiplication Check.
The multiplication tables check (MTC) is statutory for all year 4 pupils registered at state-funded maintained schools, special schools or academies, including free schools, in England.
The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently up to 12, through a set of 25 timed questions. This skill is essential for future success in mathematics, and the check will help schools identify pupils who have not yet mastered this and provide additional support.
In 2026, schools must administer the MTC in the 2-week period between Monday 1 June and Friday 12 June. Schools can use the following week, from Monday 15 June to Friday 19 June, to administer it to any pupils who were absent during the first 2 weeks or in case of any check administration delays due to technical difficulties.
They have a limited time to answer 25 questions and the passmark is 25/25. This is something we rehearse with the children and desperately need support from parents at home - we talk about patterns and ways to remember the answers - it is all about speed of recall.
As your child learns their tables - the class teacher will provide you with sheets to support their learning.
- Year 2 children are taught - 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x
 - Year 3 and 4 - 4x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 11x, and 12x

Please ask the class teacher if you wish for some resources for home.
