PSHE

At Burrowmoor Primary Academy our PSHE curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

We follow a programme of study developed from the PSHE Association’s Primary Scheme of Work, which is recommended by the Department for Education. Our programme of study not only reflects the specific needs of the pupils but also reflects the universal needs shared by all pupils.

PSHE in the Early Years Foundation Stage focuses around the Prime Area of Personal, Social and Emotional Development within the Statutory Framework for the EYFS.

Relationships and Sex Education is taught as part of PSHE and also the Science curriculum.

The PSHE curriculum has three strands which focus on Health and Wellbeing, Living in the Wider World and Relationships. Within these three strands, the children are able to discuss friendships, feelings, manners, care of our bodies – mentally and physically, growing up, relationships and sex education and the use of medicines and drugs. All these elements build their sense of who they are and how they fit within their family, the wider community as well as the online digital world.

Learning Powers and Growth Mindset

The teaching of PSHE also promotes 'Learning Powers' which include resilience, resourcefulness, reflection and collaboration and a growth mindset - where children develop positive attitudes to learning and develop an alternate view from “I can’t do it!” to “I can’t do it YET!”, understanding that we can learn from our mistakes. Developing Learning Powers and a growth mindset enables the children to take some responsibility for their learning and future success.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

We promote a culture of positive mental health and wellbeing, overseen by our Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead. We have a designated safe space in school, The Calming zone, which gives children a quiet area for reflection or for sharing their thoughts and feelings. We understand the potential impact on learning that mental health and wellbeing issues may create and work our hardest to ensure these are addressed quickly and solutions are found. Play therapists and ELSA trained staff also work with specific children. Each class has a space for children to calm and a mood board to express their feelings if needed.

 School Dog

Our school dog Pippin, has also had a positive impact since she joined us. She provides a motivation to children to attend school, as there is a sense of excitement amongst them when Pippin is in school. She also reads with children, helps Mrs Bailey deliver Diamond Certificates, helps them talk when they are upset, gives them time outside to re-centre and many more things.

Teaching

PSHE is taught discretely in classes, where an environment centred on respect of one another supports opportunities for all to be heard and feel valued. In addition to this, the wider curriculum offers exciting and engaging enrichment activities, which also benefit the children's development in the aims of the Burrowmoor PSHE curriculum.
